The United Nations Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing brought together researchers, civil society organizations, educators, and policy leaders to examine the growing challenges affecting children and families around the world.
While the discussions covered a wide range of issues, one message remained consistent throughout the meeting: children thrive when parents and caregivers are supported.
Across many countries, families are facing growing pressure caused by economic insecurity, unequal access to education and healthcare, social isolation, migration, and rapid digital transformation.
At the same time, digital technologies are becoming increasingly connected to nearly every part of family life, including education, parenting, healthcare, employment, and social connection. These technologies create important opportunities, but they also risk deepening inequalities when families do not have equal access to devices, internet connectivity, or digital skills [1,2,3].
This policy brief centers the recommendations presented by the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD), while drawing support from the broader discussions held during the meeting.
The discussions highlighted the urgent need for family-centered policies that strengthen parenting support systems, improve digital inclusion, invest in early childhood development, and build healthier environments for children and families.
