San Nicolás de los Garza (Mexico) has hosted a Meeting of Family-Friendly Cities together with the Instituto de Analisis de Política Familiar, to strengthen family integration and development. San Nicolas is a signatory of the Venice Declaration as part of the Inclusive Cities of Sustainable Families Project promoted by the International Federation for Family Development.
The Meeting of Family Sustainable Cities also had the participation of Miriam Soto Ornelas, mayor of Meoqui, Chihuahua; Norma Guel, State Secretary of the Family of Aguascalientes; and Ricardo Noriega, Director of the DIF of Zamora, Michoacán, who shared their experiences in addressing issues such as family violence, school dropouts and poverty. Internationally, Rodrigo Dalmasso, Secretary of the Family in Brasilia; Juan Antonio López Baljarg, General Director of the Institute for Family Policy Analysis; José Alejandro Vázquez, Director of International Relations and Ignacio Socias, Advocacy Talent Adquisition from the International Federation for Family Development, emphasized the importance of family policies for social well-being and urban sustainability.
First local Secretariat of Family and Social Welfare
As a highlight, The Mayor of San Nicolás de los Garza, Daniel Carrillo Martínez, announced the creation of the first Secretariat of Family and Social Welfare in the city. The new agency seeks to a cross-cutting alignment of municipal policies and programs to promote the well-being of families in the city.
The event and discussion were enriched by local and global experts. The Mayor stressed that the creation of this secretariat is a decisive step to focus the municipal government on family well-being, highlighting the importance of this comprehensive vision.
“Today we present the Secretariat of Family and Social Welfare in San Nicolás, with resources already available and with a methodological approach that will integrate all our existing programs. Our goal is to see, in the short and medium term, families that are not only happy but functional,” declared the mayor.
Parental leave, persons with disabilities and older persons
In addition, Carrillo Martínez announced plans to increase paternity and maternity days, in order to more equitably share the care of children between both parents, and offer additional support to mothers who are heads of households. A detailed analysis of existing programs will also be carried out to improve accountability.
During the event, the mayor highlighted the achievements of the San Nicolás Government, including the Autism Care Center, the Elderly Club House, the Gerontological Unit and More Safe Spaces for Women. Carrillo Martínez promised the implementation of new strategies to continue improving the quality of life in the city.
