Congratulatory message by Ignacio Socias at the side event on the Role of Youth in Digital Transformation: Towards Inclusive Growth and Social Justice, organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations and The Blue Tree Foundation during the 62nd Session of the Commission for Social Development at the United Nations Headquarters.
Thank you for inviting me to speak and for the opportunity to emphasize the importance of your work and collaboration with the International Federation for Family Development. Our alliance is crucial in enhancing our impact as we support each other’s efforts.
Families play a vital role in preventing school violence and bullying by fostering open communication, instilling empathy and respect, and educating children about the consequences of such behavior. And, in guiding youth through the digital transformation, families are instrumental in nurturing digital literacy and responsible online behavior. They educate youth about safe internet use, digital tools, and awareness of cyberbullying and privacy concerns. Creating an environment that encourages curiosity and creativity in using digital tools, supporting exploration in activities like coding and digital art, is essential. Establishing healthy digital habits, such as setting screen time limits, fosters overall well-being. Families teach critical thinking skills, instill responsible digital citizenship values, and maintain open communication channels for discussing digital experiences. Educating youth about online safety, cybersecurity, and supporting access to digital skills education further enhances their capabilities. By adapting to evolving technologies together and actively participating in their children’s digital journeys, families significantly contribute to shaping responsible, capable, and empowered digital leaders among the youth.
In essence, families serve as the primary influencers in a person’s life, significantly contributing to preparing the next generation for leadership roles. At IFFD, we recognize that young people are the architects of their future, and these initiatives empower them to make decisions that shape their destinies. Our belief is that by affording youth a voice in shaping their world, we nurture their passion for effecting positive change from a young age, contributing to the cultivation of future leaders dedicated to making a difference in our global society.
Consequently, our International Board has awarded The Blue Tree Foundation one of the 2024 IFFD Awards for their impactful work. Congratulations to the Blue Tree Foundation and its chairman, Mr. Gil-sung Park, for their commendable efforts as a dedicated civil society organization. Your presence here underscores the future direction of our society, promoting social policies aligned with the overarching development goals of the UN. This includes crucial objectives such as eradicating poverty, advancing social integration, and ensuring full employment and decent work for all, which are the primary focus of this Commission.
I trust that you will persist in your endeavors and inspire numerous other organizations worldwide to emulate your example. The commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family is an opportunity to spotlight your achievements, and I urge everyone present today to showcase their work. I am confident that it is a worthwhile undertaking.
Thank you very much.
