Presentation of results in Argentina

Meeting with members of the Argentinian Chamber of Deputies

A seminar on ‘The importance of family policies for social development’ was held in the National Chamber of Deputies, organized by the Observatorio Parlamentario Agenda 2030, which deals with harmonizing the Sustainable Development Goals with the national legislation.

The Director General of Family Develpment at the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Fernando Vedoya, opened the event considered “to strengthen to families as a focus for the prevention of social problems” as the main challenge of this Agenda. Catalina Cirio, member of the Observatorio Parlamentario, warned that “although there are 65% of the legislative projects that contemplate issues related to the 2030 Agenda, there is still no legislation in view of the Objectives for Sustainable Development.”

Ignacio Socías , director of International Relations of the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD), pointed out that “we are told what the goals are, but not how to reach them, and considering families as social agents can be key for it.” Regarding the recommendations to integrate the family perspective in the elaboration of public policies, the Chief of Social and Economic Policy of UNICEF research office, Dominic Richardson, explained that “there are no magic formulas” but we already have a lot of examples on how families help to achieve development. In conclusion, the president of the Foreign Affairs Commission, Cornelia Schmidt Liermann, considered that “the family is the natural ally to solve the problems we face.”

Other members of the Parliament also participated, including Paula Urroz, Eduardo Amadeo, Alicia Fregonese and Julio Sahad, together with some personalities and experts.

SDGs & Families presentation at the Buenos Aires City Legislature

As part of the celebrations for the International Day of Families, the Presidency of the City of Buenos Aires Legislature organized a full-house meeting on ‘The importance of the Family in the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 agenda’, together with the International Federation for Family Development and in collaboration with UNICEF and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations.

The president of the regional Parliament and Deputy Chief of Government, Diego Santilli, produced some welcoming remarks. In his turn, the president on the Commission on Health, José Luis Acevedo, stressed the social role on families. Some members of the parliament also participated, as Claudio Cingolani, Omar Abboud and Mercedes de las Casas.

The main objective of the event was to address the role of families and family policies in the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals. Among the speakers, there were national and international experts such as Renata Kaczmarska, Focal Point on the Family of the United Nations; Dominic Richardson, director of social and economic policy research at UNICEF; Ignacio Socías, director of international relations at IFFD and The Family Watch; and Ianina Tuñón, coordinator and researcher of the Children’s Barometer of the Observatorio de la Deuda Social Argentina.
