The number of children living in grandparent-maintained households doubled from 3 percent to 6 percent from 1970 to 2012. Nationally, 4.2 million of all households contained had both grandchildren and their grandparents in 2012. More than 60 percent of these were maintained by a grandparent, meaning they were head of the household.
